Mobility Scheme: The Manchester Museum

The hosting institution: The scope of The Manchester Museum makes it unique among English university museums. Its worldwide collections encompass both the natural sciences and the humanities. All the collections in the Museum, which comprise about 4.5 million items, have been formally ‘Designated’ by Government for their importance nationally and internationally. The Manchester Museum is ranked as one of the three top university museums in the UK.

Length of stay

Placement: max 2 weeks. The applicant and the host institution will jointly discuss the length of the stay.

Study visit: max 2- 3  days.

 

Characteristics of applicants

Individuals applying for placements should preferably have a background in the museum, heritage or adult learning sector with experience in developing museum learning programmes or working to make collections accessible of at least 6 months.

 

Period and activities

Manchester Museum can offer experience in the following areas of museum practice:

  • Working across cultural venues in Manchester, with focus on older people and early years
  • Working with volunteers
  • Adult learning programme at the Manchester Museum and Whitworth Art Gallery, which are both cultural assets of the University of Manchester

           

Mobility time slots

May 2012 ( on dates between 12-20 May link in with Adult Learners Week in UK)

An opportunity to see how Manchester Museum and other cultural venues in Manchester work on Adult learning especially with older learners and Early years. 

 

May – August 2012

Work  placement with Manchester Museum staff who work with family and adult audiences. 

 

October 2012

A study visit focusing on working with volunteers.

 

January – May 2013

Work  placement with Manchester Museum staff who work with family and adult audiences.

May – Sept 2012:       Unearthed Ancient Egypt temporary exhibition

Summer 2012:           West Africa linked with cultural Olympiad

Sept 2012-Jan 2013: A history of dogs exhibition

Jan 2013- April 2013: Warriors of the Plain, a British Museum touring exhibition
