Participatory museums are creative, dynamic, relevant and inclusive. Glasgow Museums has a long history of innovation in learning and access to its museums and its collection. Glasgow Museums also has an international reputation for engaging deprived communities in culture of the highest quality.

Glasgow Museums 9 museums include: Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Burrell Collection, St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, The Gallery of Modern Art, and the soon to open Zaha Hadid designed Riverside Museum of Travel and Transport. The collection is as diverse as it is large – with 1.4 million items. These range from world class collections of fine art to one of the finest arms and armour collections in Europe to natural history, social history, costumes and textiles, transport and technology and world cultures. Over 60% of the collection is of national or international significance.

Central to all our work is engaging people with their culture and heritage through diverse creative learning programmes and experiences. We do this in our museums and beyond their four walls through the Open Museum, our community outreach service.

In order to extend opportunities for learning and participation, Glasgow Museums have strategically developed multiple ways for people to get involved: –

1. through audience focused creative learning programmes and events in museums and as outreach

2. through volunteer and placement programmes

3. through targeted development work with new, under represented and harder to reach audiences

4. through collaborative partnerships,

5. By enabling other community and service providers to use museums to support their own delivery by sharing practice and expertise.

Glasgow Museums receive over 3 million visits per year. All our museums are free to visit and most are open 7 days a week.
