Manchester
The scope of The Manchester Museum makes it unique among English university museums. Its worldwide collections encompass both the natural sciences and the humanities. All the collections in the Museum, which comprise about 4.5 million items, have been formally ‘Designated’ by Government for their importance nationally and internationally. The Manchester Museum is ranked as one of the three top university museums in the UK.
The Museum has the oldest continuous museum education service in the country, dating back to 1895; moreover it undertakes, facilitates and collaborates on high quality teaching and learning for the benefit of the University of Manchester.
The Museum’s strategies seek to increase the width and depth of the visitors by increasing numbers overall but also making the visitor profile more reflective of the wider population.
The Museum is nationally renowned for its ethical and innovative approach to working with communities, which includes: representation on the Museum’s Community Advisory Panel; consultation on Museum policy development, interpretation of collections; generation of collaborative exhibitions, events and programmes.
